Assignment: Creation and supervision of the visual identity of the format for the Spanish edition of LOL

Synopsis

A group of comedians competes to be the last one to laugh for six hours. The one who stays serious the longest is the winner.

 

The “lie” of cinema is the magic of cinema.

The scenographic proposal determined the narrative of the Spanish adaptation. In LOL Spain, the spectator can see what happens inside the set, but also what happens outside. To do so, we show them what the fourth wall hides; the stage machinery, the backdrops, the operators, etc. It is like watching the movie of a movie.

The LOL “movie”

The imaginary world of LOL Spain is fuelled by multiple references.Then There Were None or Murder by Death were our narrative references. The design idea comes from pop culture. We created the concept of the set, photography, graphic design, or the costumes themselves, inspired by the villains from famous sagas like the James Bond films. Goldfinger, The Party, or the architecture of Elrod House were some of the references.

The opening. A tribute to the genre.

Consistent with this visual identity, we proposed a character presentation piece honoring mythical sequences from classic spy films, where unintentional humor plays in favor of the show’s mood. Shot with anamorphic optics and photographs inspired by Technicolor, we managed to recreate the atmosphere of an era and a genre.

Season 2. The challenge of transformation.

New season. The Villain’s Lair (Santiago Segura) is bought by two entrepreneurs (Silvia Abril and Carolina Iglesias) who are going to transform it into a Chic Resort. They will call it Marina LOL. This is the trigger for the stylistic identity of the season. White Lotus or Wes Anderson’s cinema are evident references since the beginning.  The opening of this season is already a strong statement.

 

The twist of season 2. The great innovation in the format.

Through the set design, we implemented a pioneering narrative twist in the format. We opened (literally) the fourth wall of the set, surprising the contestants, who thought they were alone, with a grandstand full of spectators. We transformed the isolation contest into a live battle of comedians.
